- Credential
- Licensed Massage Therapist
- Credential requirement
- Iowa requires a license to practice or use protected massage-therapy titles, subject to the exemptions in Iowa Code chapter 152C.
- Minimum education
- 600 hours
- Approved education
- Applicants complete at least 600 hours of supervised academic instruction in a board-approved massage curriculum. The current curriculum rule allocates required instruction across massage fundamentals, clinical practice, anatomy and physiology, pathology, ethics and business, and electives.
- Examination
- The board accepts official results from MBLEx or an NCBTMB examination; results are sent directly by the examination service.
- MBLEx relationship
- MBLEx is an accepted national examination option rather than a standalone credential.
- Application
- Apply through Iowa licensing services, pay the fee, arrange an official transcript and examination score, document lawful presence, and provide verification from jurisdictions where previously credentialed.
- Application fees
- The current fee rule lists $120 for an initial license, $60 for biennial renewal, $120 for a temporary license, a $60 late fee, and $120 for reactivation.
- Background check or fingerprinting
- The reviewed massage-specific application and rules require disclosures and lawful-presence verification but do not identify a routine fingerprint or criminal-history check for every applicant.
- Reciprocity or endorsement
- Endorsement, verification, and a conditional temporary-license path are available under chapter 821; applicants must document current or prior credentials and may need education equivalency review.
- Additional requirements
- No statewide practitioner liability-insurance mandate was identified in the reviewed chapter 152C and massage-specific rules.
