How do I apply for the MBLEx?
Apply through an FSMTB Examination Account. Your application is not complete until FSMTB has received the application, the required payment, and education verification from your massage therapy education program.
Read the current MBLEx Candidate Handbook before applying. It is the primary source for current eligibility requirements, application procedures, fees, scheduling policies, examination rules, and results.
Education verification is part of the application
You are responsible for making sure your education program submits verification directly to FSMTB.
If your school is closed, follow FSMTB’s current instructions for working with the school’s custodian of records. Do not assume that a transcript or document sent only by the applicant will satisfy the current verification requirements.
Before you continue
Make sure your application information is accurate and that your school knows you have applied.
How do I schedule the MBLEx?
Schedule your examination through Pearson VUE after you receive your ATT.
Your Pearson VUE scheduling account is separate from your FSMTB Examination Account. Use the instructions provided with your ATT to create or access the correct Pearson VUE account and choose an available testing center and appointment.
Your appointment is not complete until it is confirmed
Pearson VUE should send an appointment-confirmation email after scheduling.
Review the confirmation carefully. Check:
- your name;
- the examination date;
- the appointment time;
- the testing-center location;
- the report time;
- any instructions specific to the appointment.
If you do not receive confirmation, contact Pearson VUE using the current contact information provided by FSMTB or your scheduling materials.
Changing an appointment
Appointment-change and cancellation rules can change.
Use the current Candidate Handbook and Pearson VUE confirmation rather than relying on an older study guide, website, or personal account of the process.
What identification should I bring?
Current FSMTB guidance requires two forms of identification at the testing center.
The primary identification must be government-issued and include your photograph and signature. The secondary identification generally must include your signature, subject to the limited exceptions listed in the current Candidate Handbook; a photograph is optional.
Both forms must be current and acceptable under the Candidate Handbook.
Your identification must match your application
The format and spelling of your first and last names must match your MBLEx application, your ATT, and both forms of identification. A middle name or initial may appear on some records and not others under current FSMTB policy, provided the first and last names match exactly.
Temporary, expired, damaged, or otherwise unacceptable identification may prevent you from testing. Review the current accepted-identification rules before exam day rather than assuming that a commonly used card will be accepted.
Practical takeaway
Gather and inspect both forms of identification before you travel to the testing center.
What happens when I arrive at the test center?
Arrive at the Pearson VUE testing center at least 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment and no later than the report time shown in your confirmation.
A late arrival may prevent you from testing.
Expect security procedures
Check-in includes identity verification, a digital photograph, and biometric security procedures such as palm-vein recognition.
You will be expected to follow the testing center’s rules concerning personal belongings, prohibited items, lockers, and access to the examination room.
Prepare the logistics in advance
Before exam day, confirm:
- the testing-center address;
- travel and parking time;
- your report time;
- both forms of identification;
- your appointment confirmation;
- any approved testing-accommodation instructions.
The purpose of preparing these details is to protect your attention for the examination.
What is the MBLEx exam format?
The current MBLEx is a computer-based examination containing 100 multiple-choice questions.
You have 110 minutes to complete the examination. The full appointment is scheduled for 120 minutes, which includes time for the security and confidentiality agreement and a brief survey.
Breaks and accommodations
There are no scheduled breaks during the examination unless a testing accommodation has been approved through the application process.
Review the current Candidate Handbook for the rules governing accommodations, unscheduled interruptions, and testing-center conduct.
Current examination facts
Question count, timing, appointment structure, and testing policies can change. Verify them against the current Candidate Handbook before your appointment.
What happens during the examination?
Follow the testing center’s instructions and manage your time across the full examination.
You must answer all 100 questions within the 110-minute testing period. If time expires before you complete every question, the result is unsuccessful and a diagnostic report is not generated.
Report a problem while you are still at the test center
If you experience a technical problem or another issue that may affect your examination, notify the proctor during the examination and before leaving the testing center.
Do not wait until later to report a problem that could have been documented while it was occurring.
How are MBLEx results delivered?
MBLEx results are reported as PASS or FAIL.
If you pass, a congratulatory message is displayed on-screen upon exam completion. FSMTB sends the official result to the state regulatory board or agency you designated through the examination process.
When a diagnostic report is provided
If you complete all 100 questions and receive an unsuccessful result, the diagnostic report shows your performance across the MBLEx content areas and can help direct further preparation.
If you do not complete all 100 questions within the testing time, a diagnostic report is not generated.
Understand MBLEx results, diagnostic reports, and retesting.
What should I do after the MBLEx?
Your next step depends on the result and the requirements of the jurisdiction where you intend to practice.
Passing the MBLEx can support an application for massage licensure, but it does not issue a license or give you legal authority to practice.
After a passing result
Confirm that the appropriate regulatory board or agency receives the result, then complete that jurisdiction’s licensing application and any additional education, background-check, fee, jurisprudence, or documentation requirements.
Review massage licensing requirements.
After an unsuccessful result
Use the diagnostic information if one was generated, identify what needs to change in your preparation, and review the current reapplication and retesting rules before scheduling another attempt.
Review MBLEx passing-score and retesting guidance.
Strengthen your MBLEx study method.
Practical takeaway
Prepare for the examination process—not only for the questions.
