States regulate massage differently — some license therapists, some register or certify them, and a few have no statewide credential — so the answer depends on where you practice. What continuing education is for

Continuing education is structured learning after you are credentialed: courses, workshops and other activities that keep your knowledge, skills and judgment current. For a massage therapist it can deepen technique, add a specialty, and refresh ethics, safety and the law that governs your practice.

Most states also tie CE to renewal. A state may set the number of hours for each renewal period, require particular topics, limit some formats or recognize only certain providers. Some states have no recurring CE requirement for ordinary renewal, and a few have no statewide credential at all. The state section above leads to each state’s complete CE and renewal requirements; for becoming licensed in the first place, see licensing requirements by state.

Self-paced online, live online and in person

The same topic can be taught three ways, and states do not always treat them alike.

  • Self-paced online

    Recorded lessons, reading and quizzes you complete on your own schedule. Rules may call it home study, correspondence or distance learning.

    Check whether your state caps self-paced hours or excludes some subjects from them, and what completion evidence the provider issues.

  • Live online

    Real-time instruction delivered remotely, such as a webinar or virtual class in which you can interact with the instructor.

    Check whether your state counts live online hours with in-person hours or with online and distance hours. A limit on “online” hours may or may not include live webinars.

  • In person

    Classroom, workshop or hands-on instruction with the instructor present.

    Check whether your state requires some hours to be in person, supervised or hands-on, especially for technique courses.

Will a course count toward your renewal?

Four separate questions decide it. A course can pass the first three and still not count for you.

  1. Topic

    What the course covers. Your state may require specific topics, such as ethics, and may cap others.

  2. Format

    How it is delivered: self-paced online, live online or in person. Your state may limit formats overall or for particular topics.

  3. Provider approval

    Whether the provider or course is approved by your state authority or by an organization it recognizes. Some states define their own provider categories or approval lists; others accept a specific national approval.

  4. Acceptance

    Whether your authority will credit that course toward your requirement for this renewal period. Approval elsewhere, or by one organization, does not by itself mean your state will accept it. Your authority’s current rule decides.

Course-selection and renewal checklist

Work through it before you pay for a course, keep it with your records, and use it again at renewal. It points to the questions your authority answers; it does not answer them for every state.

A complete folder keeps you audit-ready, not audit-proof. It does not replace your authority’s rules, and no checklist guarantees that a course will be accepted.

Before you enroll

  • Identify the authority that renews your credential — a state board, a department or office, a certifying organization or a local authority — and use its current rule.
  • Note your renewal deadline and the CE reporting period your hours must fall in.
  • Confirm the total hours and any required topics, such as ethics.
  • Check format limits: caps on self-paced or online hours, and any in-person, supervised or hands-on requirement.
  • Confirm the provider or course meets your authority’s approval rule.
  • If you are unsure, ask the authority whether the course counts toward your requirement for this renewal period.

After each course, keep

  • Completion certificate — your name, license number, provider, course title, hours, completion date
  • Course objectives or outline — what the course covered, in the provider's own words
  • Attendance or completion evidence — sign-in sheet, LMS report, or proctor confirmation
  • Provider identity — legal name, contact, and approval or NCBTMB number where one exists
  • Payment or registration proof — optional, but resolves disputes fast

At renewal

  • Dates and hours reconciled — totals that match your tracker and your renewal attestation
  • Report or attest your CE the way your authority requires, by the deadline.
  • Keep your records for as long as your authority requires; retention periods differ by state.
