What regulates a program
Most school-selection confusion comes down to four ideas that sound similar and aren’t. Get these straight and the rest of the page reads easily.

Four shapes the same education takes
Most massage programs share a core educational foundation — the sciences, supervised hands-on practice, and professional standards. Where they differ is delivery: who runs them, how the calendar works, and how much depth comes with the required hours.
Certificate or diploma programs
Commonly offered by private vocational or career schools, these programs are designed to meet state licensing requirements as efficiently as possible. They typically focus on required hours, core theory, and supervised hands-on practice.
Community college programs
Public two-year colleges may offer massage therapy certificates or associate degrees. These programs are often more affordable, may include transferable academic credits, and typically follow a more structured academic calendar.
Extended or advanced programs
Some schools offer longer programs with additional clinical training, advanced assessment skills, or specialty modalities. Students considering relocation should compare requirements in the states where they expect to practice.
Hybrid programs
Many schools now use a hybrid format, delivering theoretical coursework online while requiring hands-on technique to be completed in person under instructor supervision.
The number that matters is your state’s
Hour minimums are set by state boards, not by schools or any federal authority — neighboring states can differ. What school actually costs
Costs vary widely by region, institution, schedule, and program model — and advertised tuition is rarely the whole figure. Compare total cost of attendance, and get the refund policy in writing.

Admissions and graduation, briefly
Programs commonly ask for a minimum age and a high-school diploma or GED, and many include an interview or tour; some states add background checks on the path to licensure. Requirements are set by each school and state — get the full list in writing.
Graduating typically means completing the required clock hours, supervised clinic practice, and the school’s own assessments. Completing a program does not, by itself, grant licensure — it makes you eligible to apply.
Questions to ask any program
Is this program approved by the board of the state where I intend to practice? The single most consequential question — and verifiable directly with the board, not just the school.
How many clock hours is the program, and how are they distributed? Compare against your state's requirement and against neighboring states if you might move.
What are recent graduates' MBLEx outcomes? Schools may share aggregate pass information; be wary of any program that guarantees passing.
Who teaches the sciences, and how much supervised hands-on time is included? Anatomy, pathology, and clinic hours drive both exam readiness and safe practice.
What are the total costs, and what happens if I withdraw? Ask for the full figure — tuition, kits, fees — and the refund policy in writing.
Is the school itself accredited, and by whom? Accreditation affects financial-aid eligibility and credit portability; verify the accreditor's own standing.

The profession, realistically

Those figures publish here only as dated claims, and none are captured yet; read the profile directly and weigh what it documents: the physical demands of the work, common part-time and self-employment patterns, and earnings that vary sharply by setting and local market.

How to read a programme
What programme hours are
A clock hour is time in instruction, and a programme’s total is the sum of its classroom, hands-on and supervised-practice hours. Two programmes with the same total can divide it very differently, so the total is a floor to compare against rather than a description of what you will be taught.
A credential is not a licence
A school awards a certificate or diploma when you finish its programme. A licence is granted by a state board, and completing an approved programme is one of its requirements rather than the whole of it. The two are issued by different bodies for different reasons.
What a state minimum guarantees
A minimum says what a programme must at least contain before its graduates may apply for a licence in that jurisdiction. It does not rank programmes, it does not certify quality, and it does not transfer: a programme that satisfies one state’s minimum may not satisfy another’s. Hours requirements vary by jurisdiction, which is why they are never quoted here as one national number.
