The MBLEx is an entry-level massage licensing exam.
MBLEx stands for Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination. It is administered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards and is used by many regulated U.S. jurisdictions as part of the initial licensing path for massage therapists.
At a high level, the exam measures whether an entry-level candidate can apply foundational massage knowledge in a way that supports safe, competent practice. It is not a MassageData exam, and MassageData is not affiliated with FSMTB or any state regulatory board.
What the MBLEx is used for.
States use licensing exams to help protect the public. The MBLEx gives regulators a nationally recognized entry-level measure they can use when evaluating whether an applicant is prepared to practice massage safely and competently.
Passing the MBLEx is not the same thing as receiving a massage license. Your state board or licensing agency controls licensure, including application steps, education requirements, fees, state law requirements, background checks, and any jurisdiction-specific rules.
Before you apply or schedule, confirm current requirements with the state licensing board or agency where you plan to practice.

The MBLEx content outline is organized around seven broad areas of entry-level massage practice. On this page, treat them as a quick orientation to what the exam covers, not as a full study plan.
